Do you have a will? Why not?
If you die without a will, the state laws decide how your assets are divided. By simply have a written will prepared prior to your death, YOU decide who does (and does not) inherit and how much.
I've had a will since 2000. A major event happened last year and I had to make changes. Fortunately since 2000, my finances are greatly improved and when I updated my will (in October 2006) I was able to include two charities also.
If you have children it's especially important to decide who you would like to raise them in the event of your death. I'm surprised at how many single parents haven't made arrangments for their children's futures. I'm sure they wouldn't want the children to become wards of the state, yet they make no provisions for it NOT to happen.
When I updated my will this past Fall, I also created a Living Will. Basically this assigns a person to make my medical decisions if I'm not able to.
