Almost all of the money management books that I've read recommend giving to charity as part of your budget. Mary Hunt of Everyday Cheapskate writes, "just give it away with no strings attached and out of an act of gratitude for all that you have. I suggest you give away 10 percent of your income right off the top and before you do anything else. "
Dave Ramsey also writes that giving is an important part of personal finance. "Giving liberates the soul of the giver. You never walk away feeling badly. Whether through a tithe, charitable contribution, or gift to a friend in need, give away at least some of your money. Not only does it generate good feelings, but it generates contentment. Remember, no one has ever become poor by giving."
Last year I gave $150 each quarter to Jackson Interfaith Shelter. This year I'm going to try to send at least $50 each month. Of course already this month I'm mailing $100 which is January and February's. This is in addition to my Church money and other charities.
I'd really like to volunteer again but with my schedule changing every week and now with school on Fridays I just don't know when I would be able to do it. The Humane Society had it's Vegas night yesterday but I couldn't miss class so I wasn't able to go. I'm not sure what date the next one is, hopefully the week that is Spring Break so I can volunteer for it.
